DIY Mouthwash – Eco, Easy & Effortless

Big City Hippies love it when it’s easy to make a common household item at home! Even better? When you can improve it and save money!

Using easy-to-grow garden herbs and some common household items, we created our own mouthwash! It is eco-friendly {locally made, no extra packaging, low energy to create it etc}, has no crazy chemicals or alcohol {this means it is much safer!}, super easy to make {takes all of 20 minutes} and works to clean your mouth, enhancing your pearly whites!

We weren’t so accurate with our measurements, and you don’t really need to be. Making sure it is to your taste is most important {but don’t swallow it}.

We picked some herbs that were great for mouth cleansing, as well as their flavour profiles. We chose Thyme {anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and more}, Mint (anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and more) and Rosemary {anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and more}. These 3 herbs make for a gentle, yet powerful full mouth clean. Baking Soda is a natural tooth whitener and is anti-bacterial. Himalayan Salt is full of trace minerals and elements that help re-mineralize your teeth, and heal your gums. Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from tree bark that helps protect against cavities. Essential Oils of Oregano, Tea Tree and Peppermint add another dose of immunity and healing power to your mouthwash!

DIY Eco-Mouthwash

Herbs – solid handful of Thyme, Rosemary & Mint {use what you’ve got growing! Just Mint? Go for it!}

Water {filtered please} – 4 cups

Baking Soda {aluminum free please} – 3 TBS

Himalayan Salt – 1 TSP

Xylitol Crystals – 1 TSP {to taste, optional}

Peppermint, Tea Tree and/or Oregano Oil {optional, but highly recommended} – a few drops to taste

That’s it!

Add your herbs to a pot of water {we probably used about 4 cups}. Bring to a low simmer. This will infuse the water with the properties of the herbs. Simmer for about 10 minutes {or longer if you’ve got the time}, turn off and stir in your Baking Soda, Himalayan Sea Salt, Xylitol and oils {if using}. Let it combine for a moment or so, and cool down a bit, then give it a taste test swish. No swallowing, just testing! Is it minty enough? Add more Peppermint Essential Oil. Too spicy? Add some more Xylitol.

Once it has cooled enough to handle without fear of burning yourself, grab a strainer and funnel and bottle this good stuff up!

We put ours in a nice “swig-able” jar with a cork. ‘Cause it’s nice when things look nice.

The liquid will be a greenish/brown colour due to the fresh herbs. Before using, give it a quick swirl to ensure the baking soda and salt stay distributed evenly.

The ingredients were all chosen based on their ability to clean, heal and protect your mouth, teeth and gums. Instead of putting in artificially coloured, flavoured and created mouth-washes that are harmful to you and the environment, create your own.

There are so many varieties and flavour combinations you can try! Lemon, Cinnamon, Clove, Anise, Sage! You could formulate a wash with ingredients like liquid Trace Minerals, Calcium Carbonate, Hydrogen Peroxide, Myrrh or Apple Cider Vinegar.
