We noticed an explosive amount of growth in the peanut/almond/nut butter section of local grocery stores, and were seeing new, exciting combinations of spreads! Concoctions such as coconut, banana, chocolate chip, apple pie, chia seed, hemp seed, half peanut – half almond and so many more interesting ideas!
Naturally, after examining many labels and deeming them not as healthy as their claims, and usually quite pricey, we decided to simply make our own. The price of organic almond butter alone is frightening. Making our own nut butter blend only uses about 1/2 a jar, so we still have lots left over for other uses!
We purchased a fresh jar of peanut butter and almond butter, with organic, roasted nuts as the only ingredient.
We decided to do a simple combo for our first try: Coconut, Almond, Peanut, Hemp, Chia and Cinnamon. Can you taste it already?
Half jar of Peanut Butter
Half jar of Almond Butter
1/2-1 cup Coconut Oil
1 TBS Hemp seeds
1 TBS Chia seeds
1 tsp Cinnamon
good crank/pinch of Himalayan Pink Salt
Add the peanut & almond butter and Coconut Oil to a pot, on low heat, let it all melt. The butters will become quite soft and liquefy to some extent. The Coconut Oil will melt. Stir that goodness all together.
Remove from heat and add in your seeds and spices.
pour into a glass jar, and let it set. The Chia seeds will plump up and thicken the butter, and the oils will harden
store it in the fridge or on the counter. In the fridge, it won’t be as easily spreadable, but on the counter, it’s much more liquid. It will depend on your preference. I think countertop in the winter would keep it at a great, ideal consistency. Once you start making it on the regular and playing around with proportions, you will find the right blend for you. Perhaps less coconut, or more chia.
eat as a spread on toast and rice crackers, as a topping for yogurt or ice cream, with apples and celery, straight from a spoon, in smoothies… wherever you would use a nut butter, you could probably use your own blend!
What flavour would you want to try the most? We are looking forward to creating our next jar!
